A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the URLs on your website, helping search engines discover and crawl your pages more efficiently. It's crucial for SEO as it ensures search engines can find and index all your important content.
Our tool automatically discovers your sitemap (usually at /sitemap.xml), parses all sitemap files including nested sitemaps, counts the total URLs, and cross-references with Google's index to show you how many of your pages are actually indexed.
The index rate shows what percentage of your sitemap URLs are indexed by Google. A rate above 90% is excellent, 70-90% is good but could be improved, and below 70% may indicate crawling or indexing issues that need attention.
Common reasons include: duplicate content, thin or low-quality pages, crawl budget issues, noindex tags, robots.txt blocking, slow page load times, or pages that Google considers not valuable enough to index.
We recommend checking monthly for most sites, or weekly if you frequently add new content. After major site changes or migrations, check immediately to ensure all new URLs are being discovered and indexed.
A single sitemap file can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50MB uncompressed. For larger sites, you should use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemap files.
